The Traditional Elegant Oval
Basically, oval is the elongated form of the round brilliant.
The crown of the stone is very similar to that of the round stone
except that the facets and angles have to be deviated and speeded, due
to its oblong elliptical shape. The kite-shape 8 main facets deviate
accordingly along the long axis of the stone. The pavilion can be cut with eight main facets like in the round
brilliant. But like all fancy cuts (all cuts except the round), the oval
has the characteristic "bow tie" effect in the center of the
stone when viewed from the top. In order to take out the "bow tie" (actually, the correct
phrase should be 'to lessen the "bow tie" effect to the
least', because we will not be able to "take" it
"out" completely), we have to add more facets or change the
shapes and the angles of some facets to get a complete sparkling
"twinkling" appearance. The stone will catch and reflect the
light from all directions without any "dead" spot. For natural colored stones, oval is good in retaining weight when cut
from a piece of rough, especially with step-cut or Portuguese cut
pavilion. So, this is the most common shape we encounter in natural
stones that are sold mostly by the carat weight.
