The Radiant Emerald Stone
The radiant cut is a modified form of the rectangular barion cut.
The barion cut ( actually only pavilion )was designed by Basil
Watermeyer, a diamond cutter in Johannesburg, South Africa. He has used
it with the ordinary step crown, and found it to be excellent with
diamonds. This is another instance of where amateur faceter owes much to
the diamond cutter. The barion cut use a revolutionary principle. All pavilion
facets(except the long break facet on each side) are no more than four
degrees greater than the culet angle. Also, a good number of facets end
as a point at the girdle. The stones remain true square and rectangle by
having the facets end at the long break facet. Mr.Watermeyer calls these
half-moon facets. The result of this new concept is startling. The stones, even though
they have ordinary step crowns, are extremely brilliant throughout. Each
side and end of a gem shows a spray of brilliance begining at the culet,
and spreading out at the sides. Mr.Watermeyer rightfully calls this
"fountaining". To say the least, it is spectacular. Our radiant cut has the scissors-cut style crown and modified barion-cut
pavilion. This innovating cutting yields a greater brilliance because
its' facets allow more light refracting surfaces. It is the ultimate in
brilliance in the rectangle and square stones.
